Merry Christmas Collage-Children’s Christmas Portraits December 19, 2009

I finally got a chance to take some Christmas photos of the boys. They weren’t much in the mood to be still enough (what toddler is?!) so I got a bunch of blurry ones, but 400 photos later, I managed to get a pretty good collage. I didn’t really bother to edit the photos except for a little tweaking in Picasa. If you’re looking for a photo editing program and don’t have the time or money to learn Photoshop, I highly recommend Picasa. It has enough features to tweak the lighting and also add a few special effects to your photos. Hope you enjoy and, remember me for your Christmas portraits next year!

RLFM Glory House Appreciation Banquet December 2, 2009

I had the privilege of taking photos for RLFM Glory House, a small church under Pastor Pollie B. Johnson. RLFM was holding their annual Appreciation Banquet. This year’s theme was called “Reflections of Royalty.” This was the first time they were able to have a photographer present and I was honored to be the one to photograph this event. Here are a few photos from that night.

Opening song, “Because of Who You Are” sung by David Robinson

Guest speaker, Evangelist Mary Givens Judge

Pastor Pollie B. Johnson

Good food and fellowship

Portraits of the guests in attendance were taken after the banquet. I custom made these “thank you” cards to be sent out to those who took photos.

Special thanks to Krystal Barkley who hired me for this event.

Baby Kole – 6 months baby portraits November 30, 2009

So, like every lazy busy blogger, I have failed to produce an adequate amount of posts.  But, for your viewing pleasure and for the pleasure of the Pontiff’s who have allowed me to go into their home and take their child’s 6 month baby portraits, here is a sneak peek.  I have more photos to post from different events and portrait sessions.  I hope to get on the ball soon.

Newborn Portrait Session – Baby Kole October 2, 2009

A new baby is such an exciting occasion. The celebration begins long before the time baby arrives to meet his or her new parents.  You get to pick a name, buy baby clothes, baby diapers, baby bottles, and baby toys.    Then there’s the baby shower where everyone brings gifts, gifts and more gifts for the baby.  You might even go out and buy a brand new digital camera or video camera so you don’t miss a single second of this new life.    You spend countless hours taking photographs for the new scrapbook you bought so others can enjoy the photos of your newborn.

I love it when I’m called to take photos and help document the precious new life of a child.  When Kole’s mom, a high school friend, called to ask if I’d be available to shoot a newborn photography session, I was thrilled.  Kole was a week older than typical newborns that are scheduled for a portrait session, but we still managed to get some “oh so cute” shots of him and his new mom and dad.

Kole’s parents wanted a very natural setting for his baby portraits, so I took the photos in their home.  Although they wanted a natural setting; his mom did have some ideas for photos she wanted to experiment with and I was totally up for the challenge.

Here are a few shots from Kole’s newborn portrait session:

I can’t wait to see how much you’ve grown when we meet at six months!!

Baby Portrait Photography Session – Kamie September 13, 2009

I absolutely love photographing  babies and children.  There is no other portrait session like it.   Babies and children don’t worry about what their photos will look like, or how they look during their photo shoot.  They’re carefree.  Playful…shy…crying…it doesn’t matter.  They’re beautiful just being their natural selves.  What better way is there to document those first few precious years, than with true photographs of the way children really are?

Its no secret that my own children were the inspiration for my venture into the wedding and portrait photography business.  I don’t want to miss a single moment of their lives, and when those moments are gone, I not only want to have the memories, but something to look back on for years to come.  Not only do I want them for my husband and I as parents, but for our children as well.

All that being said, here’s six month old Kamie!  You may remember her from Myspace a few months ago.

She was so pretty in pink!  Determined to practice her crawl and get to her toys, she paid little mind to the camera, but gave me and her parents a smile or two.

Kamie, I look forward to watching you grow!

Congrats on your wedding Peter and Ashley!! August 5, 2009

Ahhh…Wedding photography…

It truly is amazing to be able to capture moments from such a blissful, and momentous period in the lives of two people, such as their wedding. I remember the days of planning my own wedding and, oddly enough, finding the perfect wedding photographer was not a top priority on my list. Never did I dream I would end up being so passionate about photography and taking someone elses’ wedding photos, striving to create the perfect memories of their special day.

Peter and Ashley are such an amazing couple. They had been together for years before they finally made things official in June.  When it came time to discuss engagement photography, I asked if there were any places special to them as a couple.  Taking into account they both attended Louisiana State University, they decided to get their engagement photos done on the campus. Here is a sample of their engagement photo session.

You can view more engagement photos here

The wedding ceremony and reception took place at Classic Connections in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  The venue was immaculate, filled with the orange glow of candlelight and sparkly white string lights, spread among an abundance  of green plants.  The wedding cake, carefully designed with gold detail, was complete with a specially made cake topper designed by Ashley’s very own mom.

The bride, as beautiful as ever, couldn’t have picked a more perfect wedding dress.  It seemed to be designed specifically with her in mind, even down to the name of the dress!

There is always such a rush of emotion at weddings; excitement, anxiety and joy just to name a few, but nothing seems to illustrate that better than the moment the floodgates open and the tears start flowing. Here is the bride, still beautiful in her tears.

Here are a few more photos from their wedding.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Peter and Ashley Riley and thank you for allowing me to photograph your wedding!

The Old Film Cameras July 23, 2009

Remember those inexpensive 35mm cameras that needed film and a flash cartridge?  I always loved to take photos so I had tons of them, along with rolls of film stacked on shelves (most of them probably went bad before I even had them developed).  When I got serious about photography, and started learning about the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO, I had already acquired a digital SLR camera and film was really of no use to me; but, there is something about film that always left it to be desired.

My husband came home today with two suitcases.  A family friend is trying to sell his house, and in the process of going through his attic, he came across some belongings of a relative that had passed away.  My husband told me that I should go through the suitcases, in what I am guessing was an attempt to surprise me, keep what I wanted and throw the rest out.  He gave me very little information about what was actually in the suitcases, only that the relative was a flight attendant.

The suitcases were mostly filled with tons of pins from American Airlines, old beaded purses and costume jewelry.   I couldn’t believe there wasn’t anyone else in the family that would want some of this stuff.  As I went through one suitcase, my husband went through the other and to my surprise, he pulls out a Canon camera bag!  I couldn’t wait to find out what was inside.

I was hoping to find a film SLR camera and my excitement deceived me at first. The camera inside was pretty heavy and even came with a flash and flash bracket. The only information I could find on the camera was the name Canon and Camera “A. I searched and searched the internet for old Canon film cameras but came up with nothing that matched what I had in my hands. Finally after much frustration, I found the Matsui trademark on the inside of the front cover of the manual. I did a Google search and came up with one blog post to wet my appetite. You can view that blog here: Click me!

In the words of Patrick Potts, this camera was a “lomography gem.”  Lomography is a fun new style of artistic experimental photography.  It can be characterized by snapshots that are surreal, vignetted, have off kilter exposure, oversaturated colors, blurring and strange angles.  Lomography seems to have come from the discovery of a cheaply built Russian camera, the Lomo Kompakt Automat, and a photography experiment.  Since then, several cameras have been found to produce Lomo-like results and some cameras, such as the Holga, have even been specially marketed to produce this effect.  To see a cool video and sample photos of Lomo photography, check this link out.

The camera’s features not only include a flash and flash bracket, motor drive, and red eye reduction, but also comes with an “Easy Viewer” on top of the camera.  This makes it easy for those of us who wear glasses (although the image appears reversed)  to take a photo.   It uses two ‘AA’ batteries and standard 35mm film.

I spend a lot of time in photoshop trying to simulate lomo photography and other film development processes, so I cannot WAIT to get my hands on some film, start shooting from the hip, and start creating some genuine lomo photographs!

Be sure to look out for pics from my newly acquired film camera!

Engagement Photo Session with Caleb and Brittany July 22, 2009

I had such a blast taking Caleb and Brittany’s engagement photos!!  They brought so much energy to the photo session and were excited about their engagement and upcoming wedding.  I couldn’t be more happy for them and am honored they picked me to do their engagement photos.

I met Brittany last Fall through Facebook while trying to find other photographers who would be willing to teach me a thing or two about photography.  We soon became online and texting buddies.  It truly amazes me at some of the things she’s overcome in her lifetime.  I’m glad our paths crossed.  She suggested I use her to practice on and here is a photo from our practice shoot a while back.

On our way to the River Center, I spotted a brick wall covered in vines with an open window, ever so conviently placed, on the right corner.  It looked very fairy tale like to me.

W eventually made our way down the railroad tracks (what a workout that was in  flip-flops) where we set up a mock proposal before heading to watch the sunset on the river.

Congratulations Jamie and Carl! July 16, 2009

Well, I am finally back home after spending time with Jamie, Carl and newborn baby Camille! What a cutie!!!! It was amazing to see her little personality after only being a few days old. It brought back floods of memories about my own little ones being that small, even though she weighed almost 9 pounds!!!

I took lots of photos both at the hospital before she was born and after she had gotten home, but the most important thing was being there to support Jamie and help out in any way that I could.   Mom and baby are doing great, but you won’t see any newborn photos here.  Maybe in the future…

On the other hand, I have finally gotten the slideshow up on the website!  Its an awfully long process, but I got it worked out.   I plan on having more up in the future.

Off to edit more photos…
